Dads in Schools and Learning
Through programmes such as Family Man, Fathers plus works in partnerships with extended services and family learning providers to include men in their children's learning. Research shows that where fathers are engaged learning outcomes for there children are greatly improved.
Fathers Plus works with providers from foundation stage to key stage three in developing and delivering programmes to engage fathers and male carers in their children's learning. Read on to find out about the new Family Man Programme from Fathers Plus
Family Man
The family man website and schools outreach programme aims to encourage dads and male carers to become more involved in their children’s learning in and outside the classroom.
The new outreach programme is working with schools and supporting them to become more father inclusive through the offer of a fun day at school for dads.
The Fathers Plus team work with the school to help recruit fathers onto the session and help them to look at their approach to working with father and male carers. This takes place through training and planning sessions
The family man days are suitable for Y1 up to Y6 .
The Family Man day in school begins with school dinners with dad, then a fun session on the family man website, a visit from a historical dad, such as Roman dad and Egyptian dad and a giant games session in the hall with real games from the website brought to live. The day is hand on and very interactive. Everyone receives a free family man goody bag too!
For most of the fathers attending, this is the first experience of their children’s school life, it is also great opportunity for class teachers to meet the dads and build relationships and for the school to consult with fathers. At the end of the day each child is given a miniature video camera with which to interview their dads about their perceptions of school and how they would like to get involved in school the future. A video and evaluation along with contact details of each dad is provided to the school and the training given to the school staff will enable them to continue to build on the positive experience of Family Man.
